Empowering Special Children Since 1979
AHEAD – Special School & Vocational Training Centre, Kolkata
AHEAD is a non-profit Special School and Vocational Training Centre for children and young adults with autism, intellectual and multiple disabilities. Since 1979, we have been helping every child move one step ahead through structured education, therapies, and life skills.

Who We Are
AHEAD (Association for Holistic Education and Development) is a Kolkata-based non-profit Special School and Vocational Training Centre established in 1979.
Founder’s Legacy
Founded by Dr. Asesh Kanta Banerjee Choudhury, AHEAD was born from his dream to create a facility for children with disabilities, a journey inspired by his own experience as a visionary in a wheelchair. This mission was made possible through the support of philanthropists like late Sri Arun Kumar Jalan and family, who helped build our campus, Shree Baijnath Jalan Bhawan.

Understanding Autism
Every child on the spectrum is unique. Here’s a simple way to understand different needs.

Support for Communication
Some autistic children may speak a lot, a little, or not yet with words. We use pictures, gestures and devices to help them express themselves.

Support for Sensory Needs
Many children on the spectrum are sensitive to sound, light, touch or crowds. We create calm spaces and sensory activities to help them feel safe.

Support for Learning & Behaviour
Some children need extra help with attention, routines or behaviour. We use structured teaching and positive support to build skills step by step.
Do’s & Don’ts for Everyday Support
Small changes at home can make a big difference to your child’s comfort and confidence.
Do’s
- Use simple, clear language and give extra time for your child to respond.
- Keep routines as predictable as possible and prepare your child for changes.
- Notice and celebrate small steps of progress, not just big milestones.
- Work together with teachers and therapists, sharing what works at home.
Don’ts
- Force eye contact or social interaction if your child is uncomfortable.
- Compare your child harshly with other children or siblings.
- Punish behaviours that may be caused by sensory overload or anxiety.
- Ignore your own need for support—reach out to professionals and parent groups.
